Myth & Mystery

According to Hindu mythology, Shiva, the god of destruction and rebirth, lives on the summit of the famous mountain Kailāśā. Mount Kailā isā is considered by many Hindu groups as Paradise, the abode of souls and the spiritual center on earth. According to the description in Putana, the surface of Mount Kailash is made of crystal, ruby, gold, and lapis lazuli; it is a pillar of the earth; rising 84,000 leagues upwards; it is the center of the world mandala; and it is located in the heart of the six mountains that represent the lotus. In it flows four rivers, which extend to the four corners of the earth and divide the earth into four regions. This famous mountain has long been identified as the peak of the Himalayas, now named after it. Shiva is therefore believed to be sitting on its summit. Other traditions say that the mountain is Shiva’s experiment, while Lake Manasarowar is the culprit of her husband. The significance of this sacred mountain in Hinduism is evident, among other things, in the famous Ellora Caves in India, where the largest and most important stone carved in the rocky Mount Kailash is dedicated.

Tibetan Buddhists believe that Kailash is the home of the Buddha Demchok (also known as Demchog or Chakrasamvara), who represents great happiness. They also claim to be on this sacred mountain when Buddhism left Bön as the first Tibetan religion. Historically, Milarepa, a master of Tantric Buddhism, came to Tibet to challenge Naro-Bonchung, who represents Bön. The two magicians engaged in a great war of witchcraft, but both could not find a definite opportunity. In the end, it was agreed that anyone who could reach the Kailash conference first would be the winner. As Naro-Bonchung climbed the mountain with a magic drum, Milarepa’s followers were amazed to see her sitting quietly and thoughtfully. However, while Naro-Bonchung was at the peak, Milarepa suddenly stepped into action and found her riding in the rays of the sun, thus winning the race and bringing Buddhism to Tibet. In Jainism, Kailash is known as Mount Ashtapada and is the site where the founder of their religion, Rishabhadeva, found freedom from rebirth. In Bön, a pre-Buddhist religion in Tibet, the mountain is believed to be the site of the celestial goddess Sipaimen.
